‘Navy Days’ or ‘Navy Week’ was first held in 1927 and it welcomed over 50 000 visitors to its opening event and successfully raised £2000 for naval charities through the sale of souvenirs and guidebooks. Its success grew the following year with over 90 000 visitors and Portsmouth Navy Week 1929 saw numbers increase to more than the two previous events combined.
The event served to showcase the strength and technology of naval warfare of the day and produced opportunity for the general public to see the ships and 'Meet the Men' of the Royal Navy.
